The Met Office has put an ice weather warning in place for Hertfordshire from 5pm today.

The alert, which covers most of the South of England and West Midlands, will last until 10am tomorrow (November 20) and includes advice for people planning to walk outside as well as for motorists.

Icy patches are likely on some untreated roads, pavements, and cycle paths and people should be wary of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces, it says.

The Met Office added: “Rain, sleet and snow will continue to clear southwards across England and Wales with clearing skies to follow.

“Temperatures are expected to fall below or close to freezing quite widely across the warning area with icy patches forming on untreated freezing surfaces.”

People are advised to leave extra time to avoid having to rush and therefore putting themselves at risk on slippery surfaces.

The UK Health Security Agency has also issued the first amber cold weather health alert of the season, warning conditions could be dangerous for vulnerable people, including the elderly.

Met Office chief meteorologist Neil Armstrong said: “With cold Arctic air firmly in place over the UK, continued winter hazards are likely through much of this week, with further updates to warnings likely in the coming days.

“The current focus for upcoming snow and ice risk is from later on Tuesday and overnight into Wednesday.”
