The A10 at Foxton will be partially closed over the Christmas period for "vital" level crossing work.

Closures will be in place for seven days while Network Rail engineers replace a deteriorating level crossing road deck and worn-out track.

The road will be closed from 10am on Tuesday, December 24 (Christmas Eve) until 6am on Wednesday, January 1 (New Year's Day).

There will be a signposted diversion for drivers travelling on the A10 between Royston and Cambridge while the Foxton level crossing is closed.

During the closure, engineers will be installing a new heavy-duty road deck at the Foxton level crossing.

The pedestrian crossing deck is being replaced at the same time, and will be closed over Christmas alongside the vehicle crossing.

Network Rail will be running a fully-accessible minibus for pedestrians who want to cross the railway.

Teams will also be replacing the rails through the level crossing, as well as 615 metres of track and four sets of points in the area.

The current level crossing and the nearby track is in poor condition due to intensive road and rail use. This means that train services have to be slowed down because of speed restrictions to keep everyone safe.

The work over Christmas aims to minimise delays for rail passengers and reduce the need for road closures in future.

Simon Milburn, infrastructure director for Network Rail Anglia, said: "We’re really sorry for the disruption, but we need extended access to the level crossing to get this vital job done, and the roads and railways are typically quieter in the period between Christmas and New Year.

"Once installed, the new level crossing decks and track will serve motorists, pedestrians and rail passengers for many years to come."

The A10 is also planned to be closed at Foxton from midnight to 6am on Thursday, January 2, Friday, January 3 and Sunday, January 5, and from 2am to 2am from Saturday, January 11 to Sunday, January 12 and Saturday, February 15 to Sunday, February 16.
