Royston Photographic Society celebrates latest activities

Last week members took part in the annual monochrome competition. In first place was a shot of modern architecture in Valencia by Martin Johnson, who was praised for his symmetrical image showing clean lines and effective use of the Spanish light.

Several times each year members vote on their favourite images in a knockout competition.

Club member Peter Baker said: "The evening is set up as a fun event but success is celebrated every bit as much as other competitions and receiving the votes of fellow members is extremely prestigious."

As always, the society mounted an exhibition as part of Royston Arts Festival. This year's festival saw the highest attendance in years, with visitors invited to vote for their favourite picture.

Visitors voted for Chris Montague's picture of two mice, and Chris said he was "delighted" with the outcome.

In Cambridge the society's neighbours at Cambridge Camera Club hosted their annual exhibition, and several photographers from the Royston society entered images.

Entries were accepted and awards were won by members Martin Johnson, Peter Baker, Jim Cromwell, Bob Coote and Phil Gravett.

This month the society's landscape group is exploring the hills and woodlands around the Woburn Estate.

The trip is on the back of a recent dawn visit by three members interested in capturing scenes from this year's rut (the mating season of deer).

Members reported that "the deer 'performed' magically and offered brilliant photography opportunities".

Coming up in the society's calendar are a practical table top photography evening, the society's first print competition and a Zoom presentation based on abandoned architecture.

The chairman is also rolling out an initiative to support members wishing to develop their photography skills.

Any photographers who wish to join the society can join their meetings at Icknield Walk School on Thursday evenings during term time, starting at 7.45pm.

Photographers with any type of camera or skill level are welcome.
