Have you ever considered how you would manage if mobility challenges prevented you from attending vital healthcare appointments, social activities, or shopping, especially if you lived in a rural area with limited transport options? Or do you know someone in this situation?

Thirty years ago, Royston and District Community Transport (RDCT), a registered charity, was founded to address these needs.

Despite the evolving charity landscape, RDCT continues to thrive. Just last month, the service transported over 400 passengers, covering nearly 9,000 miles.

Most of its users are locals who are unable to access public transport due to frailty, limited mobility, health issues, or the absence of services in their area.

They rely on RDCT to remain independent and connected, attending hospital appointments, day centres, and social activities.

Volunteer drivers are at the heart of the charity. These dedicated individuals use their own cars to provide transport, while the charity also operates its own wheelchair-accessible vehicles.

RDCT serves Royston and the surrounding villages in North and East Hertfordshire, South Cambridgeshire, and North West Essex.

The success of RDCT can be attributed to the tireless efforts of its staff, volunteers, coordinators, and trustees.

This service plays a critical role in supporting vulnerable and isolated individuals, fostering social inclusion, improving wellbeing, and enhancing quality of life.

Pete Worsey, an RDCT trustee, highlights the crucial role of the entire team, particularly the volunteer drivers: "The service relies on the dedication of our volunteer drivers, who generously give their time to ensure those in need can reach important appointments. We are deeply grateful for their ongoing support."

With an ageing population and increasing levels of social isolation across all ages, demand for RDCT’s services continues to rise.

The charity is actively seeking more volunteer drivers to meet these needs.

The role offers flexibility, allowing volunteers to choose their level of commitment, making it a fulfilling way to give back to the community. Mileage is reimbursed by the passenger or the office.

RDCT is also seeking a trustee, preferably with communications and marketing experience. Could this be you?
