Barkway Preschool held an open morning to celebrate its completed refurbishment, and to thank everyone who contributed to the project.

The preschool was refurbished thanks to the support of a number of volunteers, sponsors and organisations.

Barley resident Rebecca Spencer was praised for being "instrumental" in the transformation, spending her entire summer at the preschool.

Rebecca's husband Tris, their son Dougie and his girlfriend Soph all pitched in. Dougie also sponsored the project through his garden landscaping business Gardr, and took responsibility for building all the furniture and securely fixing it to the walls.

Katie Linard, chair of the preschool committee, dedicated part of her summer to the project - bringing her children along to help Rebecca with the painting alongside other members of the committee and volunteers.

The project received support from Royston businesses. Johnson Matthey provided volunteers to help with painting, and the committee especially thanked Jayne for organising the volunteers and supporting the preschool over the years.

Several guests were invited to celebrate the refurbishment at the open morning, including the chair of Hertfordshire County Council Terry Douris, the chair of North Herts Council Clare Billing and Mayor of Royston Cllr John Rees.

Katie Linard said: "Their visit highlighted the importance of this community-driven initiative, recognising the preschool’s pivotal role in the village.

"We are incredibly lucky to have such a wonderful preschool in our village.

"The staff are amazing, the children love it, and the refurbishment has made it even better.
