Older people living in South Cambridgeshire will be helped to stay in their homes for longer thanks to funding for mobile warden schemes.

Mobile warden schemes help elderly people remain at home rather than going into a care home, and supporting them as they return home after a stay in hospital.

A total of £345,000 has been pledged to mobile warden schemes in the district for the next three years, including those in Barrington, Melbourn, Meldreth, Shepreth, Orwell, Guilden Morden, Steeple Morden, Litlington and Bassingbourn.

The pledge comes after South Cambridgeshire District Council partnered with Rose Regeneration to take an in-depth review of the schemes, how much it costs to run them and how they can be made more sustainable in the future.

The review takes into consideration a prediction of high growth in over-65s over the next 20 years.

Cllr Henry Batchelor, the council's lead cabinet member for communities, said: "Mobile warden schemes are a lifeline for many of our older residents.

"By offering daily contact and assistance, these schemes can not only prevent unnecessary hospital visits and stop people needing to go into care homes, but they can also help combat loneliness and frees up much needed hospital beds."
