The Pirates of Penzance, George Orwell's 1984 and a play inspired by Nina Simone are coming to Cambridge Arts Theatre this October.

Black is the Color of My Voice, which features many of Nina Simone's iconic songs, will be performed in Cambridge on Thursday, October 10 and Friday, October 11.

Apphia Campbell's acclaimed play follows a successful jazz singer and civil rights activist as she seeks redemption following the untimely death of her father.

Throughout the play, she reflects on the journey that took her from a young piano playing prodigy destined for a life in the service of the church, to a renowned jazz vocalist at the forefront of the civil rights movement.

From Monday, October 14 to Saturday, October 19, Sasha Regan's all-male theatre company will perform The Pirates of Penzance by Gilbert and Sullivan.

The show is described as an "exquisitely funny new take on the classic", which tells the story of a young man named Frederic who is apprenticed to a band of tender-hearted pirates.

Dramatists Gilbert and Sullivan were a Victorian era theatrical partnership, who together created 14 comic operas, with others including HMS Pinafore and The Mikado.

Sasha Regan's all-male staging is inspired by her own experiences of same-sex school Gilbert and Sullivan productions.

The show was praised by The Times as "riotously inventive".

Finally, an adaptation of George Orwell's 1984 will come to Cambridge Arts Theatre from Tuesday, October 22 to Saturday, October 26 - marking the novel's 75th anniversary.

The novel is brought to the stage in a new multi-media version by Ryan Craig, and follows the story of Winston Smith - otherwise known as comrade number 6079.
