Wimpole Estate in Arrington is taking part in the National Trust's Festival of Archaeology this month.

The festival, which runs from Saturday, July 13 to Sunday, July 28, is hosted by the Council for British Archaeology and supported by the National Trust.

This year's theme is 'archaeology and community', and visitors to selected National Trust places can get stuck into a range of activities, including guided walks and talks, handling finds, children's activities, surveying and excavations.

At Wimpole Estate, visitors will be able to go on a journey through time with a free, family archaeology trail.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to watch experts from the Cambridge Archaeology Field Group (CAFG) unearth history with on-site excavations throughout the week.

A Festival of Archaeology celebration will take place during the weekend of Saturday, July 20 and Sunday, July 21, and CAFG will have some of their discoveries on display for a closer look.

Families can take part in an excavating activity, as well as exploring the archaeology store in the house's basement.

Usually closed to the public, the basement is the perfect place to delve deeper into the archaeological methods used to discover Wimpole's past.

Outside the house, there are also summer displays at Wimpole's gardens - which are open every day between 9.30am and 5pm.

A National Trust spokesperson said: "Wimpole Estate's gardens burst with colour in the summer, and the walled garden is especially beautiful from June to August.

"Take your time to stroll through and enjoy the brilliant salvia borders and the echium walk, both of which are full of flowers and buzzing with pollinators.
