Royston Meridian WI celebrated their 100th anniversary this month with cake, fizz and 1920s hats.

On Thursday, November 9, the group welcomed Mayor of Royston Cllr Lisa Adams, WI Hertfordshire Federation chair of trustees Jill Profit and the presidents from Royston's three other WI groups to join in the festivities.

As is traditional for the WI, the group sang a hearty rendition of 'Jerusalem', at the beginning of the meeting.

All the ladies wore a hat as a nod to the original Royston Meridian WI members of 1923, who would all have worn hats as an everyday occurrence.

Royston Meridian's president, Jean Emes, proposed a toast, after which members cut and shared out the celebration cake.

The group then had time to chat and study a display of memorabilia from the past 100 years, which included photographs and scrapbooks from past meetings, outings and events that have been enjoyed by members past and present.

During the summer the group went on several outings, including a trip to paint-your-own pottery studio Glazed Creations, cream tea on board a canal boat along the River Lea and an evening at the theatre.

Celebrations will conclude with a meal at The Red House restaurant for members.
