Commuters travelling from Royston to Cambridge could face an increase in the cost of their ticket following a price hike.

The financial hit is expected to start in March 2024, following the government's decision to raise the current 5.9 per cent train travel cap to eight per cent.

Currently, an open return from Royston to Cambridge costs £9, and is projected to rise to £9.72 in 2024.

The annual cost of a daily open return is £2,340, which would become £2,527.20 after the price hike.

Cambridge is the second most expensive city to commute to in the UK, after London.

The figures were analysed by private pension provider Penfold, sourcing data from the Office of Rail and Road.

Pete Hykin, from Penfold, said: "The increasing cost of living continues to bite across all aspects of our day-to-day lives.

"Commuting costs across the UK are reaching exuberant levels and will only continue to rise as the government cap lifts in March 2024.

"If these costs do rise as predicted, in some areas, individuals will be spending almost three months' worth of salary on train travel - money that could go into much-needed savings and securing their pension pot for the future."
