The Shawshank Redemption - based on the iconic 1994 film and Stephen King's 1982 novella - is coming to the stage at the Cambridge Arts Theatre.

Starring Eastenders' Joe Absolom, the play tells the story of Andy Dufresne, who is handed a double life sentence for the brutal murders of his wife and her lover, despite protests of his innocence.

Incarcerated in the notorious Shawshank facility, he learns that no one can survive alone and strikes up an unlikely friendship with the prison fixer Red, and things start to take a slight turn for the better.

However, when Warden Stammas decides to bully Andy into subservience and exploit his talents for accountancy, a desperate plan is hatched...

Joe Absolom, who plays Andy Dufresne, said: "The Shawshank Redemption is one of my favourite films, an incredibly moving tale of friendship and injustice, and I’m thrilled to be playing the iconic role of Andy Dufresne on stage around the UK."

The play and film are based on Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, a novella written by American horror and fantasy author Stephen King.

In 1994 it was adapted into a feature film starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. The film was nominated for several Academy Awards and is considered one of the most celebrated films of all time.

Ben Onwukwe, who boasts a 30-year stage career, plays the role of Ellis 'Red' Redding.

He said: "I’m delighted to be returning to the role of 'Red' in this amazing production.

"The Shawshank Redemption film is one which many hold close to their hearts, and it’s exciting to be bringing Stephen King’s story to new audiences.
