The wife of a Spurs mad fan from Royston who died last year has spoken of the importance of remembering him with a memorial day this weekend.

The one-year anniversary of Paul Theedam’s death will be commemorated with a charity football match on Sunday.

Paul, who worked in telecommunications, sadly died on August 21 last year at the age of 50 in Adddenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, a week after trying to end his own life.

Sarah, wife of Paul, said: “He was the funniest man – he was very popular in town at his local The Green Man.

“Apart from us girls – including daughters Emma and Jessica – football and music was his life.

“I don’t get to see his friends very much, and so it will be nice to meet up in his memory. It would be great to raise money for the ward that cared for him, to get in things like more chairs and make it more comfortable.”

The five-a-side football tournament will be held on Sunday, at Eternit Sports and Social Club in Meldreth from 11am.

There will be a DJ, bouncy castle, barbecue, drink at the bar, raffle, face painting for kids and much more.

The event is £20 a player and all funds raised will go to the neurocritical ward at Addenbrooke’s Hospital – the ward that cared for him in his final days.
